This article aims to present and discuss the operations management in the Brazilian electronics sector. The electronics sector is one of the most important in Brazil, accounting for 4% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Much of the available literature focuses on the discussion of policies to strengthen the sector, without, however, to discuss its operations management, yet little known. To fill this gap in the literature, a quantitative research has been conducted, through a survey with companies of the Brazilian Association of Electrical and Electronics Industry (Abinee). The collected data were supplemented with secondary data, drawing a big picture about the sector in Brazil. The results indicate the need for companies to invest more in using information technology to expand the integration of processes, planning and developing products integrating with customers and suppliers, increases adoption of management practices in the supply chain. The originality of this paper is to shed light on the operations management of an economically relevant sector generating insights for scholars, practitioners and policymakers focused on Brazilian electronics sector

Empowerment dos funcionários e níveis de maturidade da gestão ambiental nas empresas: um modelo conceitual

This paper discusses a human resource management dimension that is rarely integrated with the theme of corporate environmental management: the employees’ empowerment .Indeed, human resources dimensions are considered non-technical factors that directly affect the integration of environmental performance in companies. Among these dimensions of human resources necessary for environmental management, we highlight the empowerment of employees. Thus, this research provides theoretical basis on environmental management in company and on employee empowerment and the integration of these themes. Finally, a framework for an effective corporate environmental management through empowerment is presented. We intend to contribute in this way for management researchers and organizational leaders, within a scope still scarce of theoretical articulations.O presente trabalho trata de um aspecto/filosofia gerencial de recursos humanos que raras vezes é explorado de forma integrada à gestão ambiental empresarial: o empowerment (ou empoderamento) dos funcionários.

The present article proposes an approach integrated among the taxonomies of the environmental management in the company and the evolutionary stages of the team work. For such, the principal proposals of evolution of the environmental management found in the specialized literature were articulated with the possible categories of the work teams. The environmental management in the company tends to be supported by the constitution of several types of teams, and when it develops to a superior performance, the team work tends to evolve with it. Thus, in one of the extremes of this reflection, the strategic environmental management tends to be aided by the formation of teams of high acting. The article contributes with the literature that integrates the team work and the environmental management, which is still extremely scarce, mainly in what concerns to the Brazilian scientific production. It still develops an evolutionary perspective of those variables, which supplies subsidies so that organizational leaders and researchers in administration can understand the current managerial maturity and the necessary efforts to reach a superior environmental acting.El presente artículo propone un abordaje integrado entre las taxonomías de la gestión ambiental en la empresa y las prácticas evolutivas de trabajo en equipo. The agriculture sector is the principal source of income for around 20% of the EU-26 population, which live in predominantly rural regions that would be devastated without its contribution. Moreover, the combined agricultural and food sector forms an important part of the EU economy, accounting for 15 million jobs (8.3% of total employment) and 4.4% of GDP. The 12 million active farmers across Europe today, have an average farm size of about 15 ha, and are expected to meet the needs of 500 million Europeans. In addition, they are also expected to promote a sustainable and balanced development of their land, also in areas where production conditions are difficult. Yet, despite the relevance of the sector, the use of land for agriculture purposes is not very sustainable. Among other issues, there is a serious problem in respect of the abandonment of agricultural land. Based on the perceived need for research on this topic, the aim of this paper is to examine the causes and consequences of agricultural land abandonment, outlining its social, economic and environmental impacts, as well as the implications for territorial integration

Selecting green suppliers based on GSCM practices: Using Fuzzy TOPSIS applied to a Brazilian electronics company

    Get PDF
Due to an increased awareness and significant environmental pressures from various stakeholders, companies have begun to realize the significance of incorporating green practices into their daily activities. This paper proposes a framework using Fuzzy TOPSIS to select green suppliers for a Brazilian electronics company; our framework is built on the criteria of green supply chain management (GSCM) practices. An empirical analysis is made, and the data are collected from a set of 12 available suppliers. We use a fuzzy TOPSIS approach to rank the suppliers, and the results of the proposed framework are compared with the ranks obtained by both the geometric mean and the graded mean methods of fuzzy TOPSIS methodology. Then a Spearman rank correlation coefficient is used to find the statistical difference between the ranks obtained by the three methods. Finally, a sensitivity analysis has been performed to examine the influence of the preferences given by the decision makers for the chosen GSCM practices on the selection of green suppliers. Results indicate that the four dominant criteria are Commitment of senior management to GSCM; Product designs that reduce, reuse, recycle, or reclaim materials, components, or energy; Compliance with legal environmental requirements and auditing programs; and Product designs that avoid or reduce toxic or hazardous material use. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The purpose of this research is to analyze the contributions of human resources management along the evolution stages of environmental management in companies. Thus a theoretical framework about environmental management and its evolution and the greening of the functional and competitive dimensions of human resource management was elaborated. This revision of literature supports the development of a triangular empirical research which is developed in two complimentary phases. In the first phase, data was collected from 94 brazilian companies with ISO 14001 certification, for further analysis and processing through statically descriptive techniques, Spearman correlation and factor analysis. These statistical methods provide relevant analytical directions to support the second phase of this empirical research. The second phase consists of a study of multiple cases in four brazilian companies to further understand the contributions of human resources management to environmental management mainly in the context of production function. The results give evidence that the evolution of environmental management requires support from the various dimensions of human resource management in terms of variety and intensity of the relationship established
